While appreciating that this won’t be happening in America for quite a while, the trailer for the final series of Downton Abbey has arrived and as you might expect, it’s got ‘end of an era’ written through it like the letters in seaside rock.

Quite apart from Carson’s name tag being removed from his office door, there’s this speech from Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville), which could be about anything when placed back into its proper context, but for the moment seems very apt: “If I could stop history in its tracks, then maybe I would. But I can’t Carson, neither you nor I can hold back time.”

The final season of Downton Abbey starts on September 20 in the UK, and will appear on PBS from January 3, 2016.
