When it comes to revealing a celebrity wedding in the newspapers, the gold standard is still Benedict Cumberbatch and his classy, understated announcement in the Times. That’s a couple blessed with the chance to take control of the public perception of their romantic lives.

Stephen Fry has had a slightly less controlled time of it, having had his own plans to marry comedian Elliott Spencer revealed in this morning’s Sun, after giving formal notice at the registry office in Dereham, Norfolk. It just doesn’t have quite the same gallant touch, does it?

He tweeted his frustration about the situation this morning (January 6):

Still, whatever minor irritation the revelation may have caused seems to have evaporated in the face of an avalanche of celebratory tweets from fans and friends alike:

And his personal assistant confirmed to BBC News that the one nugget of information that is still under wraps is the date: “Stephen Fry is very happy and proud to say that he has set the wheels in motion for a wedding sometime in the future but no date has been set due to a busy work schedule.”
