Yesterday was all about Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and a little golden fella called Oscar. Today it’s all about Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and a winged statuette called Britannia (as designed by Tracey Emin).

2015 Brit Award statuetteThe nominations for this year’s Brit Awards are in, and it’s a largely a celebration of the pop talents that made an international splash in the last 12 months. There are few who’ve made a better or bigger one than Sam Smith. He’s nominated for British male solo artist, British breakthrough act, British single (“Stay With Me”), British artist video of the year (“Stay With Me”) and British album (In the Lonely Hour)

He does, however, face some fairly stiff competition from the similarly splashy Ed Sheeran, who also appears in the British male solo artist, British single (“Thinking Out Loud”), British artist video of the year (also “Thinking Out Loud”), and British album (X) categories.

Elsewhere, the Breakthrough act shortlist is particularly interesting, as it comprises the greatest range of musical output of any list in the awards; from the rocky aggro of Royal Blood to the soothing croon of George Ezra to the esoteric haughtiness of fka Twigs.

And Sam isn’t the only British singer with a soulful voice to benefit from this year’s awards. The pre-emptive Critic’s Choice award, which he won last year, has been awarded to the permanently be-hatted James Bay, who sounds like this:

So if James is about to follow in Sam’s footsteps, expect to see a lot of hats over the coming year.
