Long before Lena Dunham and her sharp-eyed take on the social problems, vanities, weaknesses, loves and losses facing (some) young women in the modern world, there was Jane Austen doing the same thing, but, like, 200 years beforehand. Her characters were just as sharply drawn, just as comic, just as flawed and occupied just as broad a range of personality types as anything created since. They have become archetypes, whether it’s Bridget Jones playing out the Elizabeth Bennet role from Pride & Prejudice, or the movie Clueless putting interfering young Emma Woodhouse (from Emma) into the body of a Beverly Hills socialite.

The question is, which one of Austen’s greatest creations is most like you? To find out, you’ll have to come and play our little game, and with luck you shall find a result in which you may truly be proud, but remember: “A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves; vanity, to what we would have others think of us.”

Note: we have refrained from using the youthful advances of science to create this quiz, so have a care, because, as Madame Austen put it herself, “Vanity working on a weak head, produces every sort of mischief.”
