Christian Bale’s character gets lost in la la land. (YouTube)

Welsh actor Christian Bale (American Hustle) stars in Terrence Malick’s (Tree of Life) trippy Knight of Cups, opposite Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) and Natalie Portman (Thor).

Dogwood Films has released a description for the film, which reads:

Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep.

The plot summary, which sounds like an engrossing period film, shouldn’t be taken literally, as the story is set in modern day Los Angeles, and throws Bale’s character, Rick, into the Hollywood scene.

Malick is keeping the actual storyline in his vest, but from the trailer we’re introduced to Rick (Bale) who is loved by two women: one doesn’t think he’s capable of loving; and the other fights for him. Actually, there are a handful of women in and out of his life, but these two stand out.

Rick seems confused, saying, “I can’t remember the man I wanted to be.”

Is it because he drank from the “cup”?

We’re curious, what’s your interpretation of the studio’s description?
