Yesterday, Scott Derrickson, the director of Marvel’s forthcoming Doctor Strange movie—starring Benedict Cumberbatch—tweeted an image which set many a tremulous fans hearts a-flutter.

It’s a shot of a goatee-bearded Benedict, looking for all the world like Doctor Strange, set against a whooshy, spacey kind of backdrop, and it rather suits Scott’s vision for what is to come:

Instantly fan-sites and twitter accounts jumped to the entirely reasonable conclusion that this must be the first official image of Benedict in character as the mystical Doctor, and commenced whipping up a frenzy among fans of Benedict, Doctor Strange, Sherlock, Marvel comics and doctors in general.

What has been slightly less well reported is that he fairly quickly followed this up with a disclaimer, saying this wasn’t part of his planning for the movie, just a picture he liked:

Which may seem slightly disappointing, but at least it means we still have the genuine first image of Benedict as Doctor Strange to look forward to.
