Yesterday, the BBC One Twitter feed published this enigmatic picture of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman dressed as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson together with the hashtags #221back and #notkidding.

Or should that be Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman dressed as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson dressed as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson? Are the dynamic detective duo going to a costume party as a previous interpretation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Victorian heroes? Is there some kind of time-travelling sub-plot on the way which will place both Holmes and Watson back in their original context?

Frankly, we have no idea, but the clues are probably in the artifact shown in an earlier tweet:

The Sherlock special commences shooting in January.
