Matthew Macfadyen reprises his role as Detective Inspector Edmund Reid in the return of Ripper Street, which will air on Amazon Prime U.K. this week and BBC America in 2015 after some petitioning by loyal fans following its initial cancelation.

Macadyen just recently turned 40, and returning to the show may be present enough, but he’s really looking forward to being reunited with a former castmate.

Could it be Jerome Flynn? Or Adam Rothenberg?

Nope, his bowler hat.

Macfadyen talks to RadioTimes, saying, “I was thrilled to be reunited with it.”

The third series picks up four years after we left off with the H Division.

RadioTimes asks if there was any concern over Macfadyen’s look changing, and having to say goodbye to his trusty bowler. The British actor confidently replies, saying, “There was never a threat to take it away. There would have been words had it.”

While the bowler may help Macfadyen get into character, he’s not so confident to don the daring headware these days, saying, “I’d love to but I’m not brave enough. I’m not hip enough.”

Maybe Macfadyen will reconsider after taking a look at these 10 Brits actually wearing bowler hats.

What do you think, can Matthew Macfadyen pull off a bowler?
