The speculation as to which actor would take the coveted role of Doctor Strange in the movie adaptation of the supernatural Marvel comics character has been lengthy and vivid.

Actors names have been flying about like a hurricane in a casting agent’s rolodex, the most recent of which being Tom Hardy, Jared Leto and Joaquin Phoenix. But Deadline is reporting with some confidence that Marvel have decided who they want, and that it’s our very own Benedict Cumberbatch.

As a casting choice it makes total sense. Doctor Strange is one of those singular characters with a sense of personal otherness, a keen intellect and sharp instincts like a Sherlock Holmes or an Alan Turing. He’s also someone with a transparent dark side, being a traveller in occult realms and a dabbler in the dark arts. He’s basically Professor Snape with a Tony Stark makeover, or Dumbledore Holmes, if you’d rather.

So we know he can do it, Marvel knows he can do it, they just have to find the time to make it happen and sign the contracts.

Oh, and yes, the temptation to headline this little news nugget “Benedict Cumberbatch to play the Doctor” was almost overwhelming.
