Over the weekend, Emma Watson appeared at the United Nations headquarters in New York to make a speech launching an initiative that aims to bring gender equality to the world.

The HeForShe campaign is aimed at men and boys, asking them to join women’s rights campaigners and feminist groups in solidarity, and create a united front against inequality. Emma’s speech, which was received with a standing ovation, began with an attempt to tackle common misconceptions about feminism:

“Why has the word become such an unpopular one? I think it is right I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men.”
