While Idris Elba was filming Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, and absorbing South African culture to prepare for the role of Nelson Mandela, he started to develop an affinity for South African musical ideas. And being a very musical sort of actor—he’s released a fair amount of music under his DJ name Driis—he decided to try and interpret those ideas using some of his musical mates.
So, he gathered a gang together, and flew off to Johannesburg to meet some of the musical talents that had been inspiring him while filming, and try and make something happen. And lo and behold, an eleven-song album has emerged called mi Mandela, featuring contributions from Mumford and Sons, James Blake, Maverick Sabre, Mr. Hudson, George the Poet and even Atlanta rapper Cody ChesnuTT.
Naturally he explains it better, and there’s even a hint of how it all sounds in this promotional video:
mi Mandela will be released on 24 November.
