Doctor Who alum Matt Smith has leaped from one major long-running sci-fi franchise to another: this morning (May 2), Deadline broke the news that Smith, a.k.a. our recently departed Eleventh Doctor, is set to join the upcoming Terminator trilogy in a “major” role connected to John Connor (played by Jason Clarke). Arnold Schwarzenegger—returning to his role as the cyborg—will co-star alongside Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi and Byung Hun Lee.

The first of the three films, Terminator Genesis, is set for a July 1, 2015 release. Smith will appear in that first film, but it is said that his role will grow in the second and third installments.

Smith has been busy recently. He starred in Ryan Gosling‘s directorial debut How To Catch a Monster and returned to the London stage in the American Psycho musical.
