IFC Films has recently released the trailer for Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon’s film The Trip to Italy, which is to be released in the U.S. on May 16. The comedic duo team up in the sequel to their 2010 road trip buddy film The Trip, which was spent touring restaurants in the north of England. Coogan, who plays an extreme version of himself, originally intended to spend the romantical trip with his girlfriend but as they do, plans changed. He begrudgingly invited his pal Rob, who also plays a version of himself, was more than happy to tagalong.
This time around, it’s a lads trip to Italy (which we assume you figured out from the title but was worth mentioning). We meet up with the guys as they sit down to a meal and Michael Caine comes up in conversation.
Brydon eggs on his friend saying, “Do your Michael Caine.”
Coogan sweetly smiles. We can tell that he wants to but he’s holding back.
Brydon doesn’t back down and slyly asks him, “Have you seen him in The Dark Knight Rises?”
It’s apparent that Coogan has but Brydon gets the ball rolling with his own impersonation.
Coogan chews his food, listens politely, acts aloof but all the while … we know he’s just busting at the seams to let the Caine in him out.
He can’t just idly sit there and watch The Rob Brydon Show.
And, finally, for our enjoyment, Coogan gets his Caine on. The two comedic actors, who are friends in real life, come across as if they are verbally dueling with their back-and-forth impersonations.
