‘Doctor Who’s Day Roundup: Time For A Change
So here we are, day one of a new series, with a new Doctor to boot!
Peter Capaldi has started his new job today, appearing in a just-released BBC photo that shows him and Jenna Coleman still in their “The Time of the Doctor” outfits, and clutching a script.
And there’s even a quote to go with the picture.
He said: “New job, first day, slightly nervous. Just like the Doctor, I’m emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world.”
And Steven Moffat added: “First the eyebrows! Then, at Christmas, the face! Coming soon, the whole Doctor. In the Cardiff studios, the Capaldi era begins.”
Peter also appears on the front cover of the new Doctor Who magazine:
And you see that quote from Steven Moffat about flipping the show around? It was also on his mind when he recently spoke to Nerd³, telling them that change is an essential part of Doctor Who, going right back to the start: “If Russell [T Davies] had stayed on, [the show] would still have changed. I remember when we had our handover chat, he was saying ‘so what are you going to do, are you going to change that?’ and I said ‘well, what would you change?’ and we both agreed ‘it’s time to kick a lot of stuff out’. And actually, it is time again to do that.”
He continued: “It changes all the time, and it’s keeping ahead of the audience in a way. All shows age and they all age sort of in the same way. You learn how to do it, you get really slick at it, and then you think you’re really, really slick at it and everyone’s started to yawn. And you think ‘oh God, we’re really slick at this but everyone knows what we’re going to do.”
“So now we’ve got to actually get a bit raw at it and do it in a different direction. It happens on every show – you get good at it and ‘good at it’ is the enemy in the end.”
Here’s what else is going on in space and time this week:
This cartoon, from TomperWomper:
• Tom Baker speaks about the amazing reception he was given by fans, both at the Doctor Who event in London, and after his appearance in “The Day of the Doctor.”
• Speaking of the Doctor Who celebration, you can watch a full Eleventh Doctor panel with Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman, Steven Moffat, and director Nick Hurran from back in November over at DoctorWho.TV.
