Y’know how it is when you’re throwing a party and friends-of-friends start turning up, and they’ve got buddies who know people and someone else is just tagging along and before you know what’s what the entire event has been taken over by people you’ve never seen, and neither has anyone you know, and they’re making weird punch and smashing up the place just for fun?
That’s exactly what has happened to the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special, and it’s great news!
As far as anyone knew until now, the original plan was for the Doctor (Matt Smith), and a previous Doctor (David Tennant), and a third – as yet unexplained – Doctor (John Hurt) to do battle with the Zygons over a feature-length adventure, lots of thrills, lots of spills, a universe in peril, a lot of smart backchat from the Time Lord contingent and everyone’s a winner.
But now look who’s decided to come along and spoil the fun: The Daleks.
It was announced this morning that those vicious pepperpots from Skaro will be invading the Doctor’s 50th, and causing all manner of trouble, which is fitting, given that they were the first alien race Doctor Who viewers encountered, back in 1963.
In a press release (quoted on the Doctor Who website) Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer said:
“The Doctor once said that you can judge a man by the quality of his enemies, so it’s fitting that for this very special episode, he should be facing the greatest enemies of all.”
And it’s only August. Who knows what fresh astonishments will be announced between now and November 23?Read More
