WATCH: Idris Elba Inspires Humanity In A New ‘Pacific Rim’ Trailer

Idris Elba in ‘Pacific Rim’

Guillermo Del Toro’s dystopic science fiction punch-up Pacific Rim is rumbling towards American cinemas with the sure and colossal stride of one of those massive robots in the movie. There have been trailers, much has been made of the remote-control-Iron-Man suits and the dark and brutish beasts that stand poised to rid the world of all humanity.

But I’m not sure we’ve spent quite enough time examining Idris Elba’s contribution yet. Everyone was probably distracted by all the booming and the smashing up of stuff.

In any case, this problem has largely been addressed by a new trailer, in which our heroic hero is given one of those rousing speeches people get to give in movies like these. The “once more unto the breach” affairs that you have to save until everything looks like it’s going to go horribly wrong, and then hope that you’ve riled the team up enough to win by verve alone.

I don’t know which is the more inspiring, the figure-hugging suit he’s wearing, or that moustache.

Pacific Rim hits the multiplexes from July 12.
