“I’m Gonna Spend My Christmas With A Dalek” by the Go-Gos

Here’s a Christmas treat for you Whovians, especially the ones who haven’t been fully made aware of Doctor Who’s long and strange history.

It’s a song released in 1964, to cash in on the astonishing British popularity of the show, and the Daleks in particular. The group (possibly not a real group), bear no relation to the Go-Go’s that had hits with “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got The Beat” in the early ’80s, and launched Belinda Carlisle’s pop career. In fact, there’s not a lot of information we can give you about the record itself, except it sounds like this:

And because everyone loves a singalong at Christmastime, here’s the lyric sheet too, for you to print off and hand out among your friends and family, for a proper Time Lord Christmas wassail, or something:

I’m gonna spend my Christmas with a Dalek,
And hug him under the mistletoe
And if he’s very nice
I’ll feed him sugar spice
And hang Christmas stocking from his big left toe
And when we both get up on Christmas morning
I’ll kiss him on his chromium-plated head
And take him in to say hi to Mum
And frighten Daddy out of his bed!

Merry Christmas
(Dalek voice: MER-RY CHRIST-MAS!)
Happy Christmas
(Dalek voice: HAP-PY CHRIST-MAS!)
Merry Christmas
(Dalek voice: MER-RY CHRIST-MAS!)
To you

I’m gonna spend my Christmas with a Dalek,
And if I make him happy he will stay
He’ll go (whoop) and (whirr) and twiddle his eye
And then my little Dalek will say

Merry Christmas
(Dalek voice: CHRIST-MAS TREE!)
Happy Christmas
(Dalek voice: MIST-LE-TOE!)
Merry Christmas
(Dalek voice: MER-RY CHRIST-MAS!)
To you

Merry Christmas
(Dalek voice: I LOVE YOU!)
Happy Christmas
(Dalek voice: YOU LOVE ME!)
Merry Christmas
(Dalek voice: MER-RY CHRIST-MAS!)
To you
Merry Christmas
(Dalek voice: MORE PLUM PUDDING!)
Happy Christmas
(Dalek voice: MORE CUS-TARD!)

(Note: Don’t worry, you don’t actually have to do this)
(Second Note: No, I have no idea why they think a Dalek would have a “big left toe” either)
