When we think of London, we generally think of its centuries-old history, dating back to its Roman beginnings. And while the city lovingly preserves its storied past, London is also a thoroughly modern city of the 21st century. Nothing makes that point more dramatically than last week’s official opening of The Shard, the tallest skyscraper in the European Union. The event was marked by a laser light show attended by the Duke of York and the prime minister of Qatar, which put up much of the financing for the £1.5 billion, 95-story tower. “It will define London,” former London mayor Ken Livingstone told the BBC. “It’s our equivalent to the Empire State building.”
