To Be or Not to Be: Will Cumberbatch Play Hamlet?

Benedict Cumberbatch, 35, Best Actor winner in a Movie/Miniseries at the U.S. Critics’ Choice TV Awards for his title role in BBC’s Sherlock, is considering making the return to the stage.

Cumberbatch has been acting in classic plays since 2001, most recently sharing the Olivier Award for Best Actor with Jonny Lee Miller in April 2012, for their dual roles in Frankenstein at the National Theater directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire).

Cumberbatch tells the UK’s Telegraph, “I hope to return to the theater soon, hopefully as Hamlet, as it’s a role I’ve been interested in for a long time.”

While Hamlet’s exact age isn’t known, scholars guesstimate it at 33, Cumberbatch feels time is of the essence going on to say, “I don’t know if there is such a thing as a right age to play the part, but 36 or 37 seems appropriate to me, so I need to do it before long.”

In the mean-time, filming for the third series of Sherlock will resume in January.
