Captain Kirk: “Benedict Cumberbatch Is Fascinating”

Chris Pine as Kirk in 'Star Trek'

Star Trek star Chris Pine has revealed his deep glee at working with Benedict Cumberbatch on the – as yet untitled – new Trek movie, singling him out for particular praise for bringing a sense of lurking intellect to his role as interstellar villain.

Chris, who of course plays the hero Captain Kirk, says his character needs to be taught a lesson before he can develop the skills needed to save the day, and there’s no one better at dispensing those kind of tough lessons than our very own Sherlock.

He told MTV: “[The plot] is structured so that the antagonist brings out all of the qualities in Kirk that need to happen in order for Kirk to grow.

“As you know from Benedict, just watching him, vocally, he’s fascinating. He’s got this deep resonant voice. He’s a fascinating face. He’s a lovely guy and just super smart. You want to see something firing in his brain, so he’s not just a blood-dripping-from-the-fangs bad guy. Benedict brings those kinds of smarts.”

He does do that, doesn’t he. We’ve all seen it.
