Those who have followed Mr. Atkinson’s career know that he’s the polar opposite of the bumbling characters (Mr. Bean, Blackadder) that have brought him international fame. He’s not only a total car enthusiast, he’s a true boffin of the vehicular arts, and the proud owner of a McLaren F1 race car (which he famously crashed and walked away from last year). In the clip above, he demolishes the record time on the Top Gear test track in a way that’s very British – with steely reserve and elegance.
