Royal Roundup: Blogosphere Goes Wild for The Onion’s Royal Spoof
On Wednesday (June 1), The Onion created quite the royal ruckus when posting an article entitled “Prince William Divorces Kate Middleton After 5 Weeks.”
Gasp! Could it be true? Is Prince William really back on the market? Psssh, absolutely not! But such a little joke turned out to be a viral smash. According to All Headline News, “Google has pages and pages of blogs and other Web sites that have picked up the news,” and “a search on ‘Prince William divorces Kate’ brings up more than 14,000 results.” Yowsa!
In other royal-related news:
• The Duchess of Cambridge‘s former childhood abode in Berkshire hit the auction block today (June 3). A local family purchased the two-story, four bedroom “late Victorian” brick home for $10,000 (£6,089) under the asking price of $805,000 (£495,000). Still, not too shabby. BBC News reports that the winners, Emma Appleby and Tom Wyatt, were strictly looking for a “bigger family home,” and weren’t concerned with “its royal connections.”
• Now that the firestorm surrounding her big sister Princess Beatrice and that crazy royal wedding hat has finally calmed, let’s shift our attention to Princess Eugenie. The 21-year-old joined her father, Prince Andrew, for a visit at London’s Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital on Friday (June 3) and talked with young patients suffering from scoliosis. In 2002, Eugenie underwent an eight-hour surgery to correct a curved spine. And while the recovery was tough, having that operation was absolutely worth it. She told The Daily Telegraph: “I wouldn’t look the way I do, my back would be hunched over. I wouldn’t be able to talk the way I do about it and help other children who come to me with the same problem. It was a huge part of my life when I was 12 – so young. Children can see me and know that (the operation) works.”
