1947: Prince Philip marries Princess Elizabeth

Prince Philip and the then-Princess Elizabeth announced their engagement in July 1947, and they married in a lavish Westminster Abbey ceremony on November 20 of that year. After their wedding, they waved to cheering crowds from the balcony of Buckingham Palace (a tradition continued in 2011 by their grandson Prince William and his wife Catherine).
