Gwen Stefani on British Music: ‘I Was Always Such a Fan’

Gwen Stefani in 'Elle'

We totally trust Gwen Stefani when it comes to music and fashion. Since emerging on the SoCal punk rock scene more than 25 years ago, the 41-year-old pop star has become the ultimate trendsetter in both arenas, frequently tipping her hat to the Brits.

In the April 2011 issue of British Elle (via Digital Spy), the No Doubt cover girl and L.A.M.B. designer talks about her longtime love of British music.

“It’s really weird becoming a part of [British culture], because I was always such a fan,” she says. “When I discovered music it was all about the UK… Madness, The Specials, UB40, Depeche Mode, The Cure and all of that 1980s music I worship.”

Stefani added: “The music they wrote was so English, it was about their world. I thought it was the coolest thing ever.”

And what about her steady relationship with foxy British rocker Gavin Rossdale? The couple are still going strong after marrying in 2002 and are the doting parents of four-year-old Kingston and two-year-old Zuma. Stefani explains: “I’ve been with Gavin for 14 years, and, let’s face it, that is a huge accomplishment. I feel so proud of that — it hasn’t been the easiest journey.”

Speaking of Stefani’s passion for British music, let’s revisit No Doubt’s stellar version of the 1984 Talk Talk hit, “It’s My Life”:
