Absolutely Fabulous’ Star Jennifer Saunders To Write Spice Girls Musical!

OK, this is totes genius: Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders will write the Spice Girls musical, Viva Forever. Saunders tells The Stage: “I’m thrilled and terrified at the same time. It is very exciting to be writing a musical that encompasses the music and energy of the biggest girl-band of all time. My daughters grew up with The Spice Girls, I had to do it for them as well as myself.” Viva Forever is set to debut in 2012.

If anyone could do this right, it’s Jennifer Saunders. She’s done a lot with the Girls over the years, including a memorable appearance in the 1997 movie Spice World. Here’s a French and Saunders skit from 1998 featuring the Spice Girls.

And here’s a cute clip featuring Saunders and her daughters in the 1997 TV special, An Audience with the Spice Girls:

While not British himself - he was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri - he once received inordinate hospitality in London for sharing the name of a dead but beloved EastEnders character. His Anglophilia stems from a high school love of Morrissey, whom he calls his "gateway drug" into British culture.
