The ceremony itself was a snooze, the performances were mostly uninspired, and Chelsea Handler was a flat, laugh-free bust as the host. (Her failure only reinforced my opinion that Russell Brand should host every year. He is perfect in that role.) But last night’s MTV Video Music Awards will be remembered as the moment Florence and the Machine had her U.S. coming-out party, and the ginger-haired nymph-genius did not disappoint with her spectacular, high-production-value performance of “Dog Days Are Over.” After Florence did her thing, Perez Hilton tweeted, “FINALLY someone singing 100% live! Florence & The Machine killed it! Best of the night! Before her way too much lipsynching/aid at the #VMAs.” While Florence only took home one award – Art Direction – for her “Dog Days Are Over” video, she certainly commanded the respect of many in the audience.
