Ladies Rule This Year’s BRIT Award Nominations

The nominees for this year’s BRIT Awards – the UK equivalent to the Grammys – were announced earlier today. Florence and the Machine, Lily Allen, Lady Gaga, Pixie Lott, and boyband JLS lead this year’s BRIT Award nominations with three apiece. Lily, Florence, and Pixie are all nominated for British Female Solo Artist of the year, competing against Bat For Lashes and Leona Lewis. The Guardian has pointed out Susan Boyle as a notable omission, especially given Boyle’s massive sales success in ’09.

Kevin Wicks founded BBCAmerica.com's Anglophenia blog back in 2005 and has been translating British culture for an American audience ever since. While not British himself - he was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri - he once received inordinate hospitality in London for sharing the name of a dead but beloved EastEnders character. His Anglophilia stems from a high school love of Morrissey, whom he calls his "gateway drug" into British culture.
