Comic-Con Day 1 gets off to a roaring start!

Greetings, Fanboys & Girls. Your roving Comic-Con blogger checking in live from San Diego after Day #1, exhausted and overwhelmed but thrilled to report that this year’s Con is bigger, better and off to a brilliant start! (Though, maybe I should’ve known that enthusiasm was at an all-time high when an entire airplane full of strangers burst into applause when the plane touched down in San Diego this morning, now that they were 3,000 miles closer to the San Diego Convention Center and this year’s Con!)

The 40th Annual Edition of Comic-Con International isn’t set to open to the public until tomorrow morning (set your Star Wars collectible watch for 9:30 am PT!), but you sure could’ve fooled me at Preview Night tonight! Boasting crowds usually not seen until at least afternoon of Day 1, Con-ners lined up for hours outside the San Diego Convention Center in the sweaty 85*, counting down until the doors to the Exhibition Floor opened at 5pm. And with a floor-shaking roar, they flooded in, barely containing their overwhelming excitement to officially kick things off.

First stop on hundreds of attendees’ tour? The BBC America booth, back in action in #3629 (and easily found thanks to the giant branded wheel spinning atop the shop). Though shopping lines formed quickly, soon wrapping around the booth, fans squealed in delight over the just-released Mighty Boosh DVD sets and the exclusive Doctor Who shirts (including yours truly – these are some very cool shirts!) And even with temperatures were rising fast in the jam-packed arena, BBCA devotees were keepin’ cool, quoting their favorite lines from this week’s U.S. premiere of Torchwood: Children of Earth, and making plans to meet up later this weekend at the Doctor Who and Being Human panels. A clear audience fave: The Mighty Boosh – whose Comic-Con-only t-shirt quickly sold-out. (Didn’t get a chance to grab yours yet? Not to fear, they’ll be restocked Friday!)

With doors officially opening to all attendees tomorrow morning, and record crowds expected this weekend, tomorrow seems sure to be another jam-packed day, full of awestruck fan-demonium and all-out madness. (After all, if there’s one thing that’s immediately clear to any Con-goer, things are always crazier and less predictable than you expect!) But stay close to your trusty Anglophenia blog & Twitter feeds, for the latest scoop and daily recaps from here in sunny SD. Until then, beam me up, I’m out.
