John Simm: I Am The Master, Not Doctor Who

  • John Simm says being in nearly every scene of Life On Mars was grueling: “I thought I was going to have a breakdown at one point….Christ, I can’t stand actors who complain about their jobs. Though Phil [Glenister] and I used to sit around eating too much and moaning. It was like Moany Men on Mars. Moany Fat Men on Mars.” As for Doctor Who, you can scratch John Simm off the list of future Timelords; dude’s not interested: “I’m the Master. Simple as that. I don’t want to be Doctor Who. I might be the Master again… I’m not allowed to say.” (The Times)

Cowell and co would have laughed their socks off before tossing the grunters on to the trash heap of pop history. Brown would have become a catalogue model and Cave a car park attendant. And we would all have been better off for it.”

Kevin Wicks founded BBCAmerica.com's Anglophenia blog back in 2005 and has been translating British culture for an American audience ever since. While not British himself - he was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri - he once received inordinate hospitality in London for sharing the name of a dead but beloved EastEnders character. His Anglophilia stems from a high school love of Morrissey, whom he calls his "gateway drug" into British culture.
