Anglo For Your Ear: Primal Scream’s “Higher Than the Sun”

In my interview with Noel Gallagher at last year’s BRIT Awards, he said Primal Scream should get a Lifetime Achievement award. I don’t know how much stock you put in the proclamations of Mr. Gallagher, but he was really on the money. The Glasgow-based band has been innovating for years, and 1991′s Screamadelica was their Revolver. My favorite track on that album is the hazy, dreamy “Higher Than the Sun,” which seems to combine trip-hop with My Bloody Valentine-esque noise rock. Lead singer Bobby Gillespie‘s well-documented drug use informs both form and content here. Sample lyrics: “Hallucinogens can open me or untie me/I drift in inner space, free of time/I find a higher state of grace in my mind/I’m beautiful.”

While not British himself - he was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri - he once received inordinate hospitality in London for sharing the name of a dead but beloved EastEnders character. His Anglophilia stems from a high school love of Morrissey, whom he calls his "gateway drug" into British culture.
