Anglo For Your Ear: Roots Manuva’s “Witness (1 Hope)”

If you’re a fan of Torchwood, you’re already somewhat familiar with this British rapper: Roots Manuva‘s song “Awfully Deep” played during the scene in which the newly dead Owen went out to a bar and discovered that his bodily functions weren’t quite what they once were. Roots Manuva is one of the most respected rap artists on the UK scene, and I bring you his 2001 track, “Witness (1 Hope).” The video is totally low-budge, but the track is money. Witness the fitness!

Kevin Wicks founded's Anglophenia blog back in 2005 and has been translating British culture for an American audience ever since. While not British himself - he was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri - he once received inordinate hospitality in London for sharing the name of a dead but beloved EastEnders character. His Anglophilia stems from a high school love of Morrissey, whom he calls his "gateway drug" into British culture.
