Anglo For Your Ear: Preview of Anglophenia’s Top Songs of 2007
Tomorrow, I will reveal my top UK songs from 2007 that deserved U.S. success. And one of my choices will be Mika‘s “Relax, Take It Easy.” I know I’ve spouted and sputtered ad nauseum about the evils of Mika throughout the year, and I truly did despise most of his singles. (If you thought “Grace Kelly” was the most grating song of the year, then you haven’t heard “Big Girl [You Are Beautiful].”) That is, with the exception of the disco track, “Relax, Take It Easy,” which shows the falsetto-loving pop star showing uncharacteristic vocal and lyrical restraint. It has all the elements of a really good Erasure single – cheery, open-hearted, uplifting, and lots of fun. Had all of Mika’s singles been this well-crafted, I’d have been his biggest cheerleader.
