Anglo For Your Ear: Lulu’s “Boom Bang-A-Bang”

When Lulu came on American Idol this season as a coach, caterwauling and frightening the contestants, I said to myself, “She couldn’t possibly have been this scary when she was younger. No one would have taken her seriously.” I was wrong: as evidenced by this clip, she was even scarier. Bulging eyes, dramatic gestures, jazz hands – they are all there. The above performance is a clip from the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest, where this tune was a co-winner with three other songs. According to Wikipedia, the song was banned by the BBC during the Persian Gulf War. Memories of this clip were probably more traumatizing than anything Saddam Hussein could do.

While not British himself - he was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri - he once received inordinate hospitality in London for sharing the name of a dead but beloved EastEnders character. His Anglophilia stems from a high school love of Morrissey, whom he calls his "gateway drug" into British culture.
