Singer Joan Armatrading was born in St. Kitts, but she grew up in Birmingham, England. Her brilliant fusion of rock, folk, soul, and jazz in the ’70s foreshadowed such artists as Tracy Chapman and Dionne Farris. Check out this live clip of her in 1979 on some German TV show. Introducing her song, she’s somewhat timid (“If you know the words, sing along”), but when she launches into “Show Some Emotion,” she’s a vivid, sexual, humane force. And her backing band is kick-ass.
