Anglo For Your Ear: Blue and Orange

Today’s Anglo For Your Ear is themed in complementary colors, blue and orange. I have selected two classic British electropop videos to represent the colors, Erasure‘s 1990 hit “Blue Savannah” (blue, natch) and The Human League‘s 1983 single “(Keep Feeling) Fascination” (orange). Both videos are literally bathed in their respective hues. Regarding the Erasure clip, film critic Armond White says, “The director uses ingenious, daring symbolism to comment on an aspect of late ’80s/early ’90s experience: people confronting the devastation of AIDS and seeking ways to live with it.”

As for the Human League video, that’s just some weird sh–.

Erasure -“Blue Savannah”

The Human League -“(Keep Feeling) Fascination”

Kevin Wicks founded's Anglophenia blog back in 2005 and has been translating British culture for an American audience ever since. While not British himself—he was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri—he once received inordinate hospitality in London for sharing the name of a dead but beloved EastEnders character. His Anglophilia stems from a high school love of Morrissey, whom he calls his "gateway drug" into British culture.
