Anglo For Your Ear: T. Rex’s “Hot Love”

When I was in London in February, I visited Marc Bolan’s Rock Shrine in Barnes. Located at the site of the T. Rex singer’s car crash death in 1977, fans have used the spot to pay their respects and post remembrances. This song played on my mp3 player on the bus ride there (right after “Cosmic Dancer,” spookily) and struck me as unexpectedly and fittingly somber. The video is a performance of the song, a No. 1 for T. Rex in the UK, on Top of the Pops in 1971.

While not British himself - he was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri - he once received inordinate hospitality in London for sharing the name of a dead but beloved EastEnders character. His Anglophilia stems from a high school love of Morrissey, whom he calls his "gateway drug" into British culture.
