In the wake of James Morrison and PaoloNutini‘s stateside forays, yet another British blue-eyed soul man with an acoustic guitar is poised to sweepinto heavy rotation on your local adult-contemporary station. Beneath his hippie dreads,singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner has worked out a radio-ready formula to reach both teenage girls and their moms: start off whispery à la Snow Patrol‘s “Chasing Cars” and work yourself up to a throaty, twangy country-fried croon. Add some techno and jazz flourishes and voilà. It’s cynical, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t work. Take a listen to his songs, “Dream Catch Me” and “I Need Something”: I have a feeling they’ll be pretty unavoidable in a few months.
